AMG was an independent engineering company specialising in upgrading Mercedes cars before it was bought out by Mercedes. Now it is the high-performance brand of the company. However, the vehicles that have AMG badges are split into two distinct groups. The full-on AMG cars, such as the Mercedes-AMG E 63 are seriously powerful and driver-focused - and expensive. But I suspect you're talking about the other side of things, where the sporty-looking AMG-Line trim line is available pretty much with any engine.

AMG, incidentally, was named after its founders, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach (Aufrecht's birth town).
