I am planning to buy a used car in August; can you tell me what documents I would need to bring with me?
Hi Sheila,
It depends on what you want to buy and from whom you want to buy it. If you’re buying from a dealer, and availing of finance from them, you’ll need some form of photo ID and possibly a proof of address. You don’t specifically need your own insurance documents, but if you’re transferring the insurance from your old car to your new one, it’s no harm to have them with you for when you ring your insurers to make the switchover. You’ll also need all the documentation for any car you’re trading in – registration document, service history book, NCT cert and any other older documents such as, potentially, the original bill of sale or receipts for any maintenance or repairs previously carried out.
Other than that, you just need your cheque book.
