Our answer:

Hi Alan,

Don’t panic for a start. And don’t drive it, especially if it’s a recent, direct-injection diesel. Older, dumber diesels can survive a few litres of petrol, but the more high-tech engines won’t. If you are a member of the AA or another breakdown recovery service, call them. If not, go back into the garage you’re at and ask behind the till. Most petrol stations will know a local company that will come and drain your tank, for a fee.
