What diesel will I swap my Golf GTI for?

What diesel will I swap my Golf GTI for?

Hi, I have recently bought a 2011 5dr Golf GTI manual with 32k miles for €22K and it's great. At the moment the bit of driving I do for work isn't very much and the good mileage rate offered covers the monthly petrol costs. However my role will be changing in the near future and I will on the road a lot more so I am looking for an enjoyable to drive diesel that will do me a little bit better on the mpg side. What would you recommend to change to with minimal cash(I can give a bit to get the right car) on top of the trade in? I would like to stay around the 2011 age (no older than 2010 anyway). Thank you

Our answer:

Hi Shane,

Well, the obvious choice would be to go for a Golf GTD – all but identical in handling terms to the GTI (giving away a little bit of sharpness, perhaps), but with better economy. Having said that, if you drive a GTI gently and with a bit of fuel-saving skill, you can get some remarkably good economy out of it. We reckon that 45mpg is not impossible.

But if you’re fully intent on changing, how about checking out the following fun-to-drive diesels: Honda Civic 2.2 i-CDTi, SEAT Leon FR TDI, Ford Focus ST TDCi, BMW 220d M Sport or Peugeot 308 2.0 HDi GT.
