I have a 2004 Toyota avensis which has 80000 miles on clock.id like to change and have approx 15000 to 20000 budget so I'm wondering if I should buy a new car and avail of a scrap page deal or buy second hand.the cars that I like are ford focus and golf and the Hyundai models.i live in the city and only do approx 3000 km a year. My 22 year old daughter is insured on my car and has got a full licence and will be finished with the N plates in July. I will be insuring my daughter on the new car.id appreciate any advice.
Hi Mary,
It sounds like buying new and getting a scrappage deal would definitely be a good idea for you, not least because otherwise the trade-in value of your Avensis is only going to be in the region of €1,500. With your mileage, city life and needing to get your daughter insured, I think the ideal solution would be a VW Golf 1.0-litre TSI 110hp, or a Hyundai i30 1.0 T-GDI petrol. Both should be, just about, within your price range. If you’re finding them too big a stretch, consider down-sizing a little to the new-shape VW Polo 1.0 75hp, or the Hyundai i20 1.2 Premium. Both of those are decently spacious, and should be both reliable and safe.
