What are the things to look out for when buying a Porsche 911 Carrera?

What are the things to look out for when buying a Porsche 911 996 Carrera car? Where in Cork would I be best to bring it to maintain it?

Our answer:

Hi John,

First and foremost, make sure it has a full, stamped service history, either from a Porsche main dealer or from a recognised independent specialist. Porsches are more rugged and robust than other supercars and sports cars, but they are still expensive, complex machines and any skimping on maintenance leads to big bills down the line.

Aside from that, there’s not much to check over. Obviously, you want to look for such things as uneven or excessive tyre wear, which would indicate that the suspensions’s out of line, or any significant panel damage or interior wear, but the only regular mechanical malady that 996-era 911s seem to suffer from is weak head gaskets and again, if it’s been regularly and properly serviced, that shouldn’t be a problem.

As for finding a specialist nearby, I think your best bet is to contact the Porsche Club Ireland and ask some of the senior members: http://content.us.porsche-clubs.porsche.com/PorscheClubs/pc_ireland/pc_main.nsf/web/DE29E88D2A7E21D2C1256FD3004CB406
