What are the safest second hand cars?

I had a car accident 10 years ago in a Renault Laguna. Whilst the car was a write off it definitely stood up well to the head on impact. Since the accident I've only felt safe in a Renault Laguna but now l think I'm ready to move on and this is where you come in. What makes of cars (second hand)are deemed to be among the safest on the market now.

Our answer:

Hi Ann,

Renault, ever since it picked up the first five-star score in the Euro NCAP safety tests way back in 2001 for the Laguna II, has had an excellent reputation for safety, and all of its current model range scores a five-star safety racing. For that matter, most mainstream family cars will manage a five-star score, and those that are marked down are usually missing a star because some of their active electronic safety equipment is on the options, rather than the standard, list.

Mind you, if safety is your ultimate priority then, as we always say, the two brands to go for are Volvo and Mercedes. They’re the only ones that inspect real-world crashes involving their cars as a matter of routine, so their knowledge and expertise in safety matters is pretty much unmatched. If you’re ever going to have another accident (and we sincerely hope you don’t) be in a Volvo or a Merc.
