What about a hybrid SUV?

Thanks for the last two reply’s regarding petrol vs diesel. What about a hybred suv then would I have to be doing a lot of mileage to justfy buying one of them ?

Our answer:

Hi Anthony,

Plug-in hybrid (PHEVs) SUVs suit people who live within, say, 50km of their place of work and who can regularly charge the vehicle at both their office premises and at home; if you’re on the motorway a lot, PHEVs become quite uneconomical once their batteries are discharged and the onboard combustion engine is lugging around all the extra (dead) weight of the electrical systems. Regular hybrid SUVs, like the Toyota RAV4, will be marginally better on fuel than regular petrol models and they’ll have lower road tax/VRT bills, so they’re worth checking out.
