We are moving back from France with €80k to spend!

My wife and I have recently sold our business in France and are planning to move back to Ireland. We have €80-90k to spend on a spacious large car or SUV to fit our three kids and two large dogs. We have bought a hotel in Kerry and therefore are looking for advice on vehicles (large cars or SUVs) classified as commercial.

Please could you help?

Yours, Ciarán Ó Móráin and Paula Autio

Our answer:

Hi Ciarán,

Good news - you won't need to spend that much. Thanks to a loophole in the tax system at the moment (which is due to be closed off any time soon) you can buy luxurious five-seat SUVs and pay both VRT and motor tax at commercial rates, as long as you can demonstrate that your work requires the use of a commercial vehicle.

I think your two best bets are either a Land Rover Discovery Business or a Jeep Grand Cherokee BUV. Actually I reckon the Cherokee would be the one to go for here, much though I love the Discovery. The big Jeep is a sorely underrated car and in business user spec you get all the leather and luxuries but the list price is a mere €49k. That should leave you with enough change for something fun for the weekend. Golf GTI perhaps?
