We are looking for a used hatch.
we are looking for a used Hatchback, not sure about fuel type, capable of doing motorway and city driving with a budget of not more that 8K, what would you advise?

OK, I’m going to send you down some really sensible roads here… How about a Honda Civic? Your budget easily gets you into a 2008 Civic 1.4 petrol or, if you shop around, 2.2 diesel. Really well made, super-reliable, roomy and nice to drive.
Or you could go even more sensible and get a Toyota Auris. Your budget should get you into a 2009 model, and both the 1.4 diesel and 1.33 petrol are fine engines, frugal and reliable and again the Auris is spacious and comfortable, if a little bit less interesting than the Civic.
Finally, the trusty Volkswagen Golf is also within your budget, and you should be able to get a 2009, maybe even a 2010 model. The 1.6 TDI diesel is the best engine to go for, but the 1.4 turbo petrol makes a very good alternative too.
