Hi Shane, we are interested in buying a Volvo xc90. The older model 2014 seems to be great value at the moment, the only downside is the annual car tax of €1200. The newer model (we would be buying a 2015) is of course a much nicer car, but comes at a much higher cost. In your opinion which is the better car to buy? We would be keeping this car for 5+years. Would the older model be cheaper to run, given that there are more of them around and parts might be easier to come by or is that negligible.
Hi Garry,
I think over five years you’re unlikely to need many parts, per se, so the advantage in running costs of the older model will probably not make up for the extra annual cost of motor tax. That said, the gap in purchase price might well do, so get your calculator out and work out how much money you’re saving up front, and how much of it will be eaten into by the tax over five years. The old XC90 is a terrific car, even in light of the new model, so it’s well worth considering.
