Would like to buy a Skoda Octavia 1.2 TSI, built Aug./ 2012. Mileage: 70,000km. Price: 8500euros. Q: Should I be concerned about the timing chain and ask the car dealer to replace or guarantee it? Are there any other generally known issues with this particular year -2012? Thanks very much
Hi Neil,
It would be very unusual for a dealer to agree to change or specifically guarantee a timing chain. It could be covered under the standard warranty offered though, so ask about that. That car has very low mileage on it for the age so we would not be overly concerned about the chain so long as oil services were carried out on time and regularly.
Other things to watch for:
- If there is a noise in the gearbox in neutral that goes away when you press the clutch, it may mean the gearbox will need stripping down to fix.
- The cruise control switch can stop working.
- Unevenly worn rear tyres mean the rear wheels need to be properly aligned.
- There have been problems with the engine going into 'limp home' mode and various error codes appearing that can only be fixed by replacing the turbocharger.
In short, it's not the worst, but look out for the above and any other warning lights that stay on.
