VRT on an imported Golf GTI?

VRT on an imported Golf GTI?

What would be the ball park VRT & VAT to pay when importing a 2014 VW Golf GTI mk7 into the republic?

Our answer:

Hi Robbie,

Well, the VAT rate is 23 per cent, which is calculated from the price you actually paid for the car in the UK. The 2014 GTI seems to be between £10,000 and £17,000 depending on condition, mileage and whether it has been an insurance write-off, so work it out from that based on the one you're looking at.

The VRT rate is determined by the CO2 figure, which will vary by version. The Performance Pack model with a manual gearbox emitted 139g/km, we believe. Now, Revenue 'uplifts' the old NEDC figures to a WLTP equivalent, which would be 163g/km in this car. That means VRT of 26 per cent.

What's it 26 per cent of? The Open Market Selling Price that Revenue reckons the car will be worth in Ireland. This is nothing directly to do with what you pay for it and will go up if there are options. Prices vary for the 2014 GTI here, so, going with an average figure of €22,000, that means a VRT bill of €5,720.

Don't forget you will also be liable for the NOx levy and import duty.
