Hi was looking at bringing a 2018 golf GTE in from UK the price is about €20,000 but haven't a clue what the vrt would be is there any chance I could find out
Hi Glen,
It's quite complicated now, unfortunately, and VRT isn't the only cost to watch out for. If the car is coming from England, Scotland or Wales, then there's also VAT and import duty in most cases, plus the NOx levy, though the latter won't be very much for a plug-in hybrid such as the GTE.
Assuming you're importing from Northern Ireland and you only want to know about the VRT, it's a little simpler.
The CO2 emissions rating is likely to be 'uplifted' to the 51-80g/km band, which means a VRT rate of nine per cent. However, that's of the OMSP - the Open Market Selling Price - which is the price Revenue thinks the car is worth in Ireland. That has no correlation with the price you paid in the UK. We'd estimate that such a car's OMSP would be in the region of €28,000.
Hence, the VRT would be about €2,520.
As ever, this is just an estimate based on that above assumptions. Always be ready for Revenue to give you a different figure. You can appeal once the VRT has been paid if you so wish.
