It will depend on the exact CO2 and NOx emissions of the car you are looking at. There were several versions of the 1.6 TDI Octavia, you see. We looked up the figures for the 110hp model with stop-start and riding on either 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels. That car has CO2 emissions of 100g/km, while its NOx rating is 69mg/km.

The CO2 figure puts it into Band 6 for VRT - at 12 per cent of the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price). The OMSP is the price Revenue believes the car is worth in Ireland. It will vary considerably from vehicle to vehicle. For the purposes of our calculation, let's assume an OMSP of €15,000. That would mean a VRT bill of €1,800.

The NOx levy on 69mg/km would be €420.
