They’re both fine, and I’d say the Octavia has the slight edge in terms of practicality (it has more rear seat and boot space) and reliability (Skodas, for some reason, always seem to out-do their Volkswagen counterparts in reliability surveys). You do need to be aware though that the 1.4-litre petrol engine in both of those cars, although it’s a reliable old lump, is really underpowered and struggles with their weight.
