hello im looking at buying a 1.6 litre berlingo (2017 to 2019) im just unsure on insurance and tax, i want to use the van coming and going from work and carrying my tools and sometimes i may need to drive job to job im only a apprentice so dont own a business or anything and im just confused on how the tax ansd insurance works, do i need to tax/insure it privately or commercialy is this possible and what would the cost be roughly?
Hi Mark,
Given your description, you would not be eligible for commercial tax. For that, the van would have to be used exclusively for work purposes and you'd need to prove that you have your own business, not just be working for someone else.
Hence, you'd have to tax the van privately. This is easy enough, but the pricing is weird, as it goes by engine size, as cars used to do before 2008. For a 1.6-litre Berlingo, for example, the engine size is 1,501-1,600cc and the annual rate is €514.
Insurance could be tricky because the van is not owned by or being used by a company. We've heard from many people that have difficulty getting insurance on a van for private use. I'd suggest you shop around on that before you buy the van to make sure you can actually get affordable insurance.
