Trading in a Venga for an Opel Mokka...

Hi I'm looking at the Opel Mokka, a 2016 (1) 1.4 petrol model. Can you tell me what are the advantages and disadvantages of buying this car? I have been advised to switch to a petrol car because in the next few years there will be tax increases on diesel and a diesel car will lose its resale value? Can you give me your advice about this also? I will be trading in a Kia Venga 2012 diesel with 95,000 kms so if you can give me an estimate of what I might get against the Mokka for the Venga also please. Many thanks.

Our answer:

Hi Brid,

Your Kia should be worth around €5-6,000 as a trade-in, and yes, you’re right — it’s well worth considering trading from a petrol to a diesel over the next few years. The problem is that we don’t know exactly what the Government has planned, as yet, in terms of any tax increases on diesel cars or fuel. It is likely that some tax penalty will be placed on diesel soon, but we just don’t have any clear indications as to what and when yet. Hopefully the upcoming Budget will give us a clearer idea. As for residual value on diesels, there’s an urban-rural split. Certainly, buyers who live in town are now starting to favour petrol and hybrid more, but diesel is still king down the country,

The Mokka is a decent car, but you won’t find it as spacious or as light to drive as your Kia. It’s a good looking crossover, and the 1.4-litre petrol engine is decent, but it’s compromised by trying to squeeze an SUV-style body onto a mechanical package that’s largely drawn from the small Corsa hatchback.
