It depends what you need - they're very different cars. The Toyota is smaller (albeit still very spacious) and if you're doing mostly short, urban hops then I'd suggest its petrol engine would suit you best. 

The Passat is bigger, more luxurious and more comfortable and its diesel engine would be best suited to long, regular motorway hauls. 

The Toyota would be more reliable overall in the long term, but the Passat is also really well built so there's not much in it. 

So, as I say, it depends what you need. A compact petrol car for mostly short journeys? Or a bigger diesel for long haul?
