Too soon to buy an electric car?

Is it too soon to buy an eletric car (affordable)?

Our answer:

Hi Duarte,

Depends on how you define affordable. There are some electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf or the Hyundai Ioniq, which aren't too much more expensive than a conventional five-door hatchback. Most of them are pretty pricey though, and certainly more expensive than, say, a hybrid. In fact, if you’re planning to go electric but don’t fancy paying the premium needed to get into a fully-electric car, then a hybrid (such as a Toyota Auris, which is surprisingly well-priced in hybrid form) could be a better idea all-round. On top of which, electric motoring still requires you to have a lifestyle that fits the car, rather than the other way around — so that means having off-street parking for overnight charging, and mostly doing sub-100km round-trips rather than constant long journeys. Longer journeys in electric cars are certainly do-able, but you need to plan ahead a bit more, and you are then at the mercy of the public charging network.
