The 1.4 GT TSI engine is a pretty complex thing, thanks to using both a turbocharger and a supercharger, so it needs careful looking after if it’s to stay reliable. There is some internet chatter about timing chains breaking, but they don’t seem to be that frequent and Volkswagen has never recalled the model for that problem, despite internet assertions that it has. By and large, Volkswagen makes very reliable cars so as long as you buy carefully and make sure the car you’re buying has a full and complete service history, you should be OK.
