Thoughts on this Golf?

Hi I am looking for a car for my daughter. She has seen a VW golf 1.4, 215,000 miles. The milage is very high I think. Whats the highest milage a VW golf can do? It is in great condition and has been serviced regularly. What would be a good price for that?

Our answer:

Hi Geraldine,

Dealing with the price first, you don’t specify the age but the use of the 1.4 suggests either a late Mk3 or early Mk4, so from the mid- to late-2000s. In which case, the car should be anything between €1,000 and €2,750 with that sort of mileage on it, unless it’s a GT – in which case it might be more like €3,000-€3,500.

In terms of the mileage it can cover, there is no maximum limit. Cars do not have a pre-set expiration date or mileage, so it is very much a case of how it has been looked after and used in its life. To have done 200,000km-plus in more than a decade on the road is not out of the ordinary and if it has an extensive service history, looks clean and tidy and also drives well, there’s no reason to avoid this car if your daughter likes the look of it.
