Thoughts on the Passat GTE?

Hi, I’m currently driving a 2011 1.4TSI VW Passat Saloon and am thinking of upgrading to a 2018/19 VW Passat GTE Estate. Most of the examples out there seem to be really high mileage. I know service history should be factored in on petrol and diesel cars but should I have additional concerns over the battery on this GTE modal. Also, is there anything else I should be aware of? Thanks, Brendan.

Our answer:

Hi Brendan,

The good news is that the battery gets a longer warranty than the rest of the car - eight years or 160,000km. That means Volkswagen has confidence in it lasting. Studies have also shown that, in general, electric vehicle batteries don't deteriorate dramatically.

Saying all that, do set your expectations of the electric range at a realistic level, and we'd always tell buyers that they should only consider buying a plug-in hybrid if they have an easy way to charge the car up at home or work on a regular basis.
