The GLA is a nice car, but it’s not a proper off-roader if that’s what you’re looking for. Then again, none of its major rivals are either. The high points are great comfort and excellent build quality, and decent fuel economy too. The low points are a cabin that feels a little cheap in places, a slightly small boot and a noisy 2.1-litre diesel engine option. As for the petrol/diesel decision, I’d say it depends on where you’re doing those 20,000km. If it’s mostly motorway then diesel is probably a good idea, but if you’re mostly in town then I’d suggest that a petrol might still be the best choice.
