I am looking at a Skoda Fabia 1.2 Ambiente 2009 which has a 233,000km mileage. This beltXchain discussion got me confused, but what I concluded is that this year's model and engine come with a chain which is NOT expected to be changed (regardless the km). Am I right? What other details should I pay extra attention to for not buying a problem (and so help me God, not have an accident), please? I'll pay €2,490 for it (cash).
Hi Valeria,
Assuming you're talking about the 1.2-litre petrol model, then you are right: it uses a timing chain, which does not have scheduled replacement intervals. Note that the 1.2-litre diesel version does have a timing belt, though.
Other things to look for:
- Noisy air conditioning system, possibly not working properly
- Damp footwells due to poor door alignment and sealing
- Faulty rear hatch lock
- Failure of rear wiper motor
- Knocking/creaking steering system
Most of these things can be fixed, but the could cost a few hundred Euro each time. Also, that Fabia is prone to loads of electrical issues that are usually traced to either a bad earth or chafing of wires in the engine bay. Both are very easy to fix, so bring the car to a good auto electrician if it has electrical issues.
