Thoughts on my Insignia's belt?

i have just bought a vauxhall insignia es cdti ecoflex it has 11900 miles what should i do about cam belt do you think i should get it changed as i dont know if it has had a new cambelt done as i am worried about driving along then belt snapping and is there anyway to show that it needs doing ie any noise or running of car that hints it needs doing

Our answer:

Hi Alan,

You've not told us the year or size of engine, so we have to do some guesswork here. Also, I assume you mean more than 11,900 miles, as that's barely run in. The 2008-2012 Insignia 2.0 CDTi's belt, for example, should be changed at least every 150,000km or six years.

If the belt is making noise then it's already probably damaged. There is generally no way to tell that a belt is on the way out other than physically inspecting it. A good mechanic could do that for you for a small fee, but we'd recommend you get it changed if you have no service history on the car.
