Thoughts on automatic 2012 Focus?

Hello, I found a Ford focus 2012 automatic 2.0 diesel titanium model around 70k miles and less than 10k euros. I did a test drive and in those few minutes all is good. But I read a few articles about Ford focus automatic transmission problems. What is your comment on Ford focus automatic transmission. Thanks in advance for advice.

Our answer:

Hi Ajin,

In general, if you’re seeing problems with a circa-2012 Ford Focus automatic transmission, it’s usually down to fluid leaking onto the clutch. The automatic was a six-speed dual-clutch style system (similar to the Volkswagen DSG gearbox, and supplied to Ford by Getrag). They can start to experience juddering or shuddering under acceleration, and that’s because the input shaft seals can leak, allowing transmission fluid to get onto the face of the clutch. If it’s really bad, you need to replace both the seals and the clutch units, which is expensive, but sometimes it’s just a matter of replacing the seals and cleaning the clutch mechanism (though obviously the gearbox has to be physically removed). If the car has a full and complete service history, then there’s less to worry about, but obviously it’s an issue to look out for.
