Thinking of converting a van into a camper...

Im thinking of converting my 2007 sprinter van into a camper van . Im just wondering is it expensive to register it as a camper afterwards or is it down to how much expense i put into the build .like high end finish or introductory basic finish .thanks

Our answer:

Hi John,

You'll need to pay an 'SQI' engineer to inspect it after the work and provide documentation. That and receipts for all the work done, and images, must be sent to Revenue to calculate the VRT payable. This will be 13.3 per cent of the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price), i.e. the price Revenue reckons the finished article is worth. In reality this is likely to be the going rate for the base van plus the cost of all your work. So yes, the VRT you pay is affected by the amount you spend on the vehicle to convert it.
