Thinking of changing Discovery to a private car.

Thinking of changing Discovery to a private car.

Hi, we are thinking of purchasing a 2012 landrover discovery 4 3l. It's registered as commercial but just wondering is it possible to change it to private as I would be using for private use and my partner might use it the odd time as it has a tow bar for work. Will I be able to insure it and would taxing it mean it would cosr €1200 per year?. Thanks Natasha

Our answer:

Hi Natasha,

There won't be any problem with Revenue in that transation - you just need to inform your local motor tax office. It can be tricky to insure a commercial vehicle as a private motorist, but once the status of the vehicle is changed to private then I don't see any issue, though it won't be cheap. It might be worth employing a broker and talking them through that.

In terms of motor tax, I'm afraid it will be €1,494 a year because of the engine size. Motor tax is determined on that when you convert a commercial vehicle to private use, regardless of its year of registration.
