Thinking of buying a Merc GLK.

Is a Mercedes Benz with 200 thousand kilometers reliable enough? I'm thinking of buying a GLK 320 or 220 diesel, year 2008 to 2010. What can I expect to face, regarding mechanical and electric problems? Suposed the previous ( 1 owner) maintained It through oficial MB dealers? Is an equivalent BMW ( X3) as reliable? Wich should I go for? Thanks in advance!

Our answer:

Hi Geraldo,

The Mercedes will be fine to buy with that mileage, provided it has an impeccable service and maintenance history. The GLK is from the era when Mercedes was coming out of its most unreliable phase, so it shouldn’t present too many issues – if you go for the turbodiesel, watch for any signs of turbo wear (white smoke or excessive black smoke), or a clogged diesel particulate filter (sluggish performance, rough idling). Other than that, the GLK should be a decent second-hand buy; as to whether it would be more or less reliable than a BMW X3 of the same age and mileage, we think they’d both be about the same in the dependability stakes.
