We are a growing family. We are also do a lot of outdoors activities. We would like a seven seater with boot space. We have a healthy budget. We are thinking of a 161 Volkswagen caravelle 240HP. It ticks all our boxes. What I am worried that the insurance and tax for this vehicle would be high. The other vehicle we like is the discovery sport but there is very little room in boot. Is there anything you can recommend.
Hi Eimear,
Well, we can’t help on the insurance front (minefield — get a good broker to help you), but motor tax on a Caravelle varies from €570 to €750 a year depending on the model. Not outrageous, perhaps, but certainly not cheap. A good alternative are the Citroen SpaceTourer and Peugeot Traveller Combi — they have a smaller 1.6-litre diesel, so are much slower (still fine to drive, though) and have Band B tax. Well worth a look.
