The tax on my Corolla Verso is crippling...

I've a 2006 Corolla Verso 2.2 and the tax is a crippler, but I have four children; what do I do?

Our answer:

Hi Brendan,

It’s a tough one, but you need to sit down and do your sums carefully and see if the cost of changing to a newer, lower-tax car will be more or less than just keeping paying the tax on your existing Verso. If you could afford to trade up to a 2010 Verso 2.0 D-4D, then your road tax would drop to €390 a year, which would be a significant saving. Better yet, why not consider trading in for a new one, if the numbers add up, and get a 1.6 D-4D Verso, which will have annual tax of just €200 a year?

If you need to keep the purchase price down, then maybe consider buying an older Volkswagen Touran with a petrol 1.4 engine. You might need to do a bit of digging around but you can get them for around €9,000 and your annual tax then would be just €385.
