Tell me more about crewcabs...

Hi Guys, can you please explain the Crewcab situation. Is this a pre modified car to allow you register it for commercial tax or do you have to convert it yourself? Also what are the best crewcabs around? Thanking you in advance. Dean

Our answer:

Hi Dean,

Crew cabs generally aren’t modified aftermarket, they tend to be new-build from the manufacturer (although, of course, there are exceptions to every rule). You can, and indeed are supposed to, register them for commercial tax, but one word of warning: if you do ANY social, domestic, or pleasure driving in the car, you’re going to be breaking the law and if you’re caught it’s a €4,000 fine. You can register any crew cab as a private car, though. It’s more expensive than commercial tax, but them’s the breaks.

The best ones, in our experience, are the Volkswagen Amarok (almost refined enough to be a viable SUV alternative) or the Toyota HiLux, which is a little rougher around the edges, but impressively tough and rugged.
