Talk me through Opel and VW 4WD...

Compare to 4MOTION of VW GROUP the 4 WD of OPEL is better or worst. Until last week i had a 4MOTION TIGUAN TSI 150HP

Our answer:

Hi Antonis,

Volkswagen’s 4Motion technology is very much like Opel’s – it’s an ‘on-demand’ system, that only sends torque rearwards when it’s needed; it is not a permanent four-wheel-drive set-up. There are two types of 4Motion, depending on whether the car you owned had its engine mounted transversely (electronic coupling control of torque) or longitudinally (mechanical centre diff control of torque) and, as your Tiguan is transverse-engined, then it has the former type of 4Motion. As to whether VW or Opel has the better 4WD system, that’s really a case of ‘suck it and see’ – you might prefer one or the other, but until you’ve tried them both, you’re not going to know.
