Does it still make sense to buy a diesel car in 2018.
Hello Padraic,
The short answer is yes. The slightly longer answer is: try and get the most modern example you can, if you’re buying used. Anything that’s Euro 6-compliant is unlikely to get clobbered by pollution taxes in the near future and our taxation system still works on CO2 corroborated by the outmoded NEDC figures, so diesels – with very low CO2 – are cheap to tax. There’s been a lot of demonisation of diesel in recent months and a strong shift by Irish new car buyers back towards petrol power, but there’s no reason to avoid the latest, cleanest diesels. Also, final note: if you do more than 20,000km per annum, buy a diesel. Otherwise, stick to petrol or a hybrid.
