Should we think about winter tyres?

Should we think about winter tyres?

Should we in Ireland because of climate change adopt the policy of getting winter tyres on steel rims and then using our summer tyres later in the spring time?

Our answer:

Hi Malachy,

I think probably all-season tyres are actually the way to go. Full winter tyres only really work properly below temperatures of 7 to 7.5-degrees Celsius and really there's only a few weeks when the mean temperature gets that low in Ireland.

If you live in a remote spot, especially in the Midlands or North East where the snow and ice tend to be worse, then yes, winter tyres from late October to late February are probably a good idea. For the rest of us, regular tyres (or possibly those all-season ones) and a bit more care and attention to how we drive are probably sufficient.
