Should I worried about buying a write-off?

Should I worried about buying a write-off?

Hi, I'm looking at a 08 Ford Focus Style from a private seller. 85 K miles, price 6K. A history check tells me this has been a UK write off, category D. It has nonetheless been NCt'd here since 2012, and taxed continuously since import. Reason for worry? Seems better value/cheaper than similar cars here. Thanks.

Our answer:

Hi Sheila,

I'd be slightly concerned. A Category D write off isn't the worst thing in the world - it just means that the insurance company decided that the cost of the repair was greater than the value of the car. It depends on what the damage was and the quality of the repair. You might need to do a little more digging and try to find out what happened. If the car has a proper service history, I would expect to see receipts for the repair work. If it doesn't have those, or you can't track down what happened, I'd say walk away. An NCT is reassuring but it doesn't mean the car is right.
