Should i sell my 05 1.9tdi passat? get great milage 50mpg, averaging only 10,000km/yr and roughly putting in 7-800 a year servicing and parts. also tax is a killer so thinking of biting the bullet and spending 7 or 8 grand, or should i just keep on going till it stops?
Hi Maurice,
What you need to do is sit down and do your sums carefully. It's always tempting, when your car has a big tax bill, to try and upgrade to something with lower CO2, but you have to remember that tax is only one cost. Changing a car almost inevitably means taking out some sort of loan, and the rule of thumb is that it's almost always cheaper to keep an older car going - tax or no tax. That said, there are other savings with a newer car such as potentially improved fuel consumption and lower maintenance costs. So, grab a pencil, paper and a calculator, sit down and work out exactly what you're spending and what you'd need to spend to get a newer car.
