Hi there, My 1.2 petrol 2013 VW polo is currently out of action due to the timing chain being on the brink. The car has 76000miles/123000km mileage on it. The job has been estimated for around €650-700 but I’ll be getting a more accurate quote on Tuesday. The car also has a problem with the lock on the driver’s door and does not open using the key on this side. Unfortunately it has no central locking system either. Would I be better off considering to trade it in at the moment or invest in the repairs? How much longer should I get out of it once the timing chain is fixed? Or could this lead to more issues with the engine? It recently passed the NCT in Jan also. Any advice on this matter would be much appreciated. Thanking you in advance.
Hi there,
You’d be best off repairing that. In mint condition, it would have a value approaching €10,000 so the repairs to the timing chain and the remote central locking would make it financially viable to keep the Polo once they’re done. Furthermore, you should easily get another 160,000km out of the replacement chain. It’s odd that your first one hasn’t lasted the distance. It may be down to lack of servicing.
