Hi. I have an avensis diesel 151 128,000 kms I work all around Ireland and do 45,000 kms a year. I am unsure of whether I should buy a new diesel car now or drive on in my current car and wait for a hybrid or electric in a couple of years. I am worried of huge depreciation on a new diesel in the face of the rising demand for hybrids and the amount of cars coming in from the uk would leave me with a valueless diesel car in a few years that I could not trade. Would you advise to stick or twist?
Hi John,
We’d say stick. Of all cars capable of adding another 90,000-135,000km without trouble to your existing mileage, a Toyota Avensis diesel is probably unsurpassed. You’re not going to lose a huge amount of cash on it as a result and it should tide you over until battery tech in hybrids and electric cars has got to the stage where a) they have the same cruising range as a diesel and b) they should be more affordable than they are at the moment.
