Should I insist a dealer taxes a car?

Hi, Buying a used car from a dealer and I noticed there is no road tax on it, last taxed until July 2022 and this is now February 2023. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Should I insist on the garage taxing it (even if only for short period) as part of the deal?

Our answer:

Hi Alan,

That's not massively unusual and not an issue in itself - you will only be liable for the tax from the date you take ownership. Of course you could try to get the dealer to tax it for a short period to sweeten the deal, but they're under no obligation to do so.
