Should I have been charged VAT for my import?

I imported a 2018 Fiat 500 in January 2024. From Northern Ireland. The car was registered as new in N.I. In 2018 and I have VQ7 letter from Swansea proving this. I was still charged VAT on top of VRT. Is this correct?

Our answer:

Hi Brian,

Our understanding is that, unless that car had fewer than 6,000km on the clock, you should not have been charged VAT, though it would have been your responsibility at the time to prove the history of the car.

Your best bet is to go back to Revenue and see if a refund is due.
