Retiring my 19yr old Golf! Would love an electric car but only have budget of €15,000(max€20,000) so probably a hybrid or petrol is more realistic, should I go hybrid as new as possible and keep it for as long as poss or get something petrol older and cheaper for a couple years with the aim to go electric? And in each case what would you recommend I look for that’s similar to my old golf? Live rurally and drive daily 20/40km with longer cross country runs every month.. 2 person family +dog!
Hi Ruth,
Well, you can actually buy a pure electric car for your money – no end of Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe models are available on the second-hand market for this sort of cash, but there are also other options like the BMW i3, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, the Kia Soul EV and even, possibly, a Volkswagen e-Golf. Your daily driving will mean you will be fine with any of these, although you will need to plug them in regularly either at your place of work or at home to make them viable. A good plug-in hybrid might be a decent alternative for you, given your occasional longer run – and there’s a much wider choice of those available for the cash.
