I have 191 diesel Kodiaq (45k kms). Thinking about changing. Can’t decide between EV a hybrid, mild hybrid or PHEV. Or to go with petrol or diesel. I live in rural location. 45km each way to work (20k motorway, 25k county road). I’m separated and look after my 5 year old daughter 2 or 3 nights a week. It’ll be only car in my household so I want something I can trust. Are there PHEV’s out there that are economical even on longer journeys? What about trade in value of whatever car I buy in 3-5 yrs
Hi David,
With one eye on the future and, as you alluded to, resale value, I'd suggest you're a perfect candidate for an electric car. Any electric car at all will easily cover the distances you mentioned. Obviously that only makes sense if you have off-street parking and the option to fit an EV charger at home, especially given the rural location. Theoretically, an electric car should be more reliable than one with an engine as it has a lot fewer moving parts.
If you decide upon a PHEV instead, you'll still need a home-charger to maximise its efficiency. The only ones that are economical on a long run are those that use a diesel engine instead of petrol. There are very few of those around and we feel they're overly compromised in other areas, such as weight and packaging.
It's no point compromising your everyday use of a car for the few times a year you need it to do a long journey, however, so think long and hard about how you use your car most of the time. It seems like a big step to go from diesel to electric, we know. It won't be for everyone just yet.
