Should I change my Golf's timing belt?

Should I change my Golf's timing belt?

I have have a 2002 volkswagen golf. There is 118000 miles on the clock. There timing belt has been changed before but I'm not sure at what time. I was wondering often should the timing belt be changed.

Our answer:

Hi Peter,

You've not told us anything about the engine, which would help us narrow things down. For your information, Volkswagen recommends the following:

1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol: every 90,000km (56,000 miles)

1.9 diesels: same, though later models had 120,000km intervals (about 75,000 miles)

In all cases we would recommend drivers change the belt earlier than the manufacturer recommends.
