I planning on buying a new diesel car Should I go ahead
Hi James,
Obviously only you can decide whether it makes sense for you or not, but I can offer my opinion on the matter.
A new diesel today only really makes sense for those that cover quite long distances regularly at elevated speeds - i.e. motorway speeds or free-flowing main roads. That will ensure the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and other components don't clog up. Maintenance costs can be very high if this is not the case.
Diesels are not very suitable for regular use in built-up areas for the above reason, but also because they emit harmful pollutants.
I would be a little cautious about the future value of diesel cars given the way that legislation is going, but that's quite a long-term consideration and if a diesel car is being bought today to carry out long distances for the next three years, then in reality, its job will be done before a resale price is thought about.
Conversely, for consistent long-distance driving without the need to wait for charging up, it's difficult to beat the economy of a good diesel. They're also well-suited to carrying heavy loads and towing.
Hopefully that has been of some help.
