Questions about commercial tax...

Ask a Question h5 seater v 2 seater jeep hi , we are currently downsizing from a 7 seater jeep to preferably a 5 seater. apparently, one cannot downsize to a 5 seater any longer as the rules have changed, even though i see several 5 seater jeeps every day. my hubby takes two children to school and needs the extra seats, can anyone please advise as we cannot afford to pay the higher rate of tax any longer and want to pay the commercial tax as hubby is self employed and still need the second row of seats, also can we get commercial insurance if we have a second row of seats?? your advice greatly appreciated..thank you:

Our answer:

Hi Celine,

You're right, the rules did change to close a loophole in the definition of a commercial vehicle SUV. However, even if your husband does use a commercial vehicle for work purposes, it cannot be taxed as a commercial if it is used for any reason other than that, including bringing the kids to school. The fines are hefty, too, so it's not worth the risk. On top of that, commercial insurance won't usually cover the car for private use.

I can only suggest you look for a modern car with enough space for the family and low emissions to bring your tax bill down.
