i am planning to buy a car from belfast which is 2012's Hyundai i30 Active 1.4 patrol with a mileage of 54000. how much should i spend on it?
Hi Chinna,
Well, here in Ireland that car should be worth about €9,500. However, if you’re buying it from Belfast, you’re looking at a UK import and so they’re more like £5,500 at the moment (which is only about €6,100 on a direct exchange). However, to import a car, you need to pay Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) on it, which is set at a percentage according to its Open Market Selling Price here in Ireland (i.e., roughly €9,500). As the 1.4-litre 2012 i30 put out 142g/km of CO2, that VRT will be 23 per cent of €9,500, which is €2,185 – so, it could still work out cheaper for you (€6,100 plus €2,185 making the car €8,285), but you have to work out whether you think it’s worth the hassle of importing the Hyundai… or whether you just seek out a decent example of the same car, here at home.
Please bear in mind that the VRT calculation is very approximate and will depend on extras fitted to the car, etc.
