Peugeot 500, Mazda CX-5 etc?

Hi Shane, Which of these mid spec SUV's would hold it's value best over 3 years from new, and which would be your preference in general? All are automatic and pure petrol. Peugeot 5008 1.2, Mazda CX-5 2.0, Honda CR-V 2.0 mild hybrid, Nissan X-Trail 1.3. Would a premium brand hold it's value more, e.g. would I be better to buy an ex-demo A4 Avant for around the same price (40k). Thank you, Tony

Our answer:

Hi Tony,

It's not easy to predict residual values at the best of times, and with a change in the market mix in terms of petrol vs. diesel vs. hybrid, along with Brexit and the likely reduction in used imports, it's more difficult than ever. So, please take this answer as my opinion rather than science!

I'd expect the Nissan to fare worst, as it's the oldest model of the list. Assuming that hybrid popularity continues to rise, the Honda should do best, especially as Honda is seen as a reliable and trustworthy brand. Between the Peugeot and Mazda I'm not sure which way it would go. All things being equal, the Mazda would, in my opinion, hold its value better, but its 2.0-litre engine could put future buyers off, which the Peugeot's 1.2 won't. Irish buyers are still a little obsessed by engine size, even though it has nothing to do with taxation now.

Finally, you're right, premium brands often keep their value well, and not buying spanking new means you're already missing out on the first hit of depreciation, so that A4 is not a bad option at all. Though presumably you've decided that petrol or hybrid power is best suited to your needs. If so, don't go buy a diesel A4.

Hope that's of help
