Hi Michael,
It depends. If you're a low-to-medium mileage driver, and especially if you drive mostly in town, then go for petrol.
If you do lots and lots of mileage, mostly on the motorway, then diesel is still a good idea, but it is worth checking out some of the latest hybrids (e.g. Prius, Ioniq, BMW 330e) as well.
